I was asked to participate in the #AlohaYourSenses campaign, sponsored by Hawaiian Tropic® at Walgreens. Although I have been compensated, all opinions and attempts at being clever are my own. Thanks for supporting the brands that support me and this little blog o’ mine.
This has been a big year for me. I embarked on a new career in marketing, I dove into run coaching, I moved up to Encinitas (and back in with Brittany), I bought my first brand new car, and I turned 30. I was pretty freaked out about entering this new decade and I honestly didn’t want to make a huge deal about celebrating it. I didn’t want a party or even a big dinner with friends. When Brittany pressed me about what I wanted for my birthday, my answer was simple: peace, quiet and some Vitamin D. And maybe a little pampering. 😉
I didn’t want to deal with traveling, airports, taxis or even a long road trip because we just went to Boston, then I flew to Sacramento, and I’m headed to LA next weekend for work. I am kind of over airports and long car rides at the moment but I still wanted to feel like I was getting away. So a staycation it was, and we created our own slice of paradise.
Brittany and I stayed at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa and even though it is only a whopping 5 or so miles from home, it felt like a world away. As soon as we arrived, we checked in at the spa, changed into white robes and and explored the spa grounds. Within an hour we were lying in the most gorgeous room getting side by side massages. It was perfection.
We spent most of the day lounging by the pool, sipping on mimosas and eating fresh, healthy seafood salads. Since we were creating our own tropical oasis, during our staycation, I went to Walgreens and loaded up on gobs of Hawaiian Tropic sunscreens figuring this was the perfect time to test it out. Knowing we’d be basking in the sun for the majority of our trip we wanted to make sure our skin was protected (hi, 30!) but we also wanted to maintain the pampering theme we built the trip around. This means, any product we used should feel and smell amazing because turning 30 also means getting smart about the sun. I’ll admit, I’ve been super unsafe for most of my life. I’ve only gotten wise the last couple of years. (Yep, I used to use a tanning bed about twice a week in college. Ugh! Story for another time.)
I love the sun and I still want to embrace my inner sun goddess… but safely. The New Hawaiian Tropic® Silk Hydration™ doesn’t disappoint and it’s super breathable so it feels like it’s barely on. We lathered up and basked away, soaking in the sunshine.
We sat under the roman falls (my massage therapist raved about these), laid out on our lounge chairs, sat in the hot tub and napped by the pool. We indulged in the silky goodness of the Silk Hydration Face Lotion, knowing it wouldn’t clog our pores because it’s oil free. And with the sun kissing our skin and the smell of Hawaii all around us, it felt like we were off on some faraway vacation. Physically we were in California but mentally we were on island time – which is exactly the feeling Brittany wanted to evoke when planning this little weekend, and exactly what I wanted for my 30th. Nothing more, nothing less.
Later that first night we made our way over to the adults only pool which just so happened to be next to a Bat Mitzvah where a bunch of kids were karaoking their hearts out. I can get down with some Justin Bieber, but a kid with a screechy voice singing Justin Bieber, not so much. But it was kind of hilarious watching the adults at the pool get annoyed by it all and throw little adult tantrums. We ordered a glass of wine and called it a day. The kid karaoke may have gotten to us a little bit, too.
We’d planned on showering and getting all dolled up for dinner but when the sun began to set, we thought it would be about 900 times better to order room service. I got a tuna nicoise salad, Brittany ordered a shrimp cocktail, we split some French fries and ordered a movie. It was seriously so great.
Side note: Paria, of Mom on the Runsanity, was at the same resort at the same time for a yoga retreat! I wanted to meet her in person so bad but kept failing miserably. One day I will get to hug her.
While winding down I thought it would be a good time to try the final of the three Hawaiian Tropic lotions I brought, the one for after the sun. This stuff smells like fresh coconut and papaya and it moisturizes really well after a day in the hot sun. I will definitely be using this all summer. Being in the sun all day never fails to wipe me out. We were in bed before 10 p.m. and I was so at peace with it. #thisis30 #turnup
The next morning, we woke up early and enjoyed some coffee on the terrace overlooking the golf course and eventually made our way to the bistro for some brunch (which was really lunch at that point). I was already sad the weekend was ending so I tried to soak up every last second. Staycations are the perfect miniature escape from reality … I only wish they lasted a tad bit longer.
We tried to prolong the weekend after leaving the resort. We drove around, took some photos for the blog, ate pitaya bowls in Solana Beach and then decided to go for a little joy ride in my new car. We ended up at Lake Hodges without intending to and thought, why not go for a 6 mile trail run? We wouldn’t end up at the Manao Falls in Hawaii, but we knew the trail would still be beautiful.
And It WAS beautiful. The air was crisp and cool. The sun was shining. The lake was sparkling. I was doing my most favorite thing in the whole world. Finishing the weekend high on endorphins was the grand finale to the most perfect “getaway” and I was happier than I ever could’ve imagined running into this next decade.
This past weekend was just the “Aloha Therapy” I needed. Sunshine, rest and relaxation, some endorphins and a little pampering. It’s all a girl really needs. Cheers to 30!
