Happy National Running Day, everyone! I thought it would be crazy of me not to post today considering it’s the national holiday for the very thing this blog is built on; so here I am. I still can’t believe I’ve been a runner for over a decade. Read my running story here.
I definitely was not always a runner and I can still remember having to quit partway through the one-mile physical fitness test in gym class back in elementary school. I hated running. It hurt and it sucked. I’m not quite sure how but that Pop-Tart loving, athletically challenged kid who would rather read a book than run a lap became a serious runner. Life is crazy like that and it’s been awesome ever since.
For those of you who are thinking about possibly starting to run or maybe train for your first race, I am telling you that you absolutely should. Lace up your shoes, get outside and just try. It might suck at first but I promise, with time and consistency, it will not only suck less, it will actually start to feel good.
1 // Running is like a free therapist and an antidepressant all rolled into one. Nothing alleviates stress and turns a bad mood around like a sweaty run. Endorphins are legit.
2 // Running burns a ton of calories. This means more room for fro-yo and pizza in your life.
3 // You’ll meet some of the coolest people around. Join a run group or get involved in the online running community and you’ll connect with awesome people left and right.
4 // It’s a great excuse to buy new clothes and shoes. Running apparel has come a long way and it’s actually crazy cute and stylish these days (think lululemon, Graced by Grit, Oiselle and Fabletics).
5 // Running will change you for the better. The payoff of running consistently is immeasurable and it looks different for everyone. Just trust me on this one; it’s worth the effort.
So there you go. If you were considering it, I just gave you 5 totally valid reasons why you need to go for it. Not tomorrow, like right now. Run happy!
How are you celebrating National Running Day?
I’m doing a 6-mile tempo run. Woo woo!
