I guess I should get back to writing about my training since I’m now in the midst of training for TWO big races. I’m in that sheer excitement phase. Training feels new again and it’s fun, while simultaneously hard, to hit paces I haven’t hit in many months. I’m excited to see what I am capable of this fall and winter.
I did my first group run with the 50k girls last Saturday. I woke up before sunrise (hi, 5 a.m.) to run with Lauren, Jenna and some other new friends. Most of us did 12 miles – about 8 on trails and 4 on the road – and then we hopped in the ocean afterwards. We talked and splashed and then chatted some more over acai bowls. It had been way too long since the gang was together and it felt SO good.
I spent the rest of the day reading, relaxing, blogging about my awesome ClassPass giveaway (check it out!) and then B and I had a much needed date night. We went to Solace for some rosé and veggie burgers and then watched the sunset. It was just one of those perfect, blissed out summer nights. We had so much to talk about and catch up on because we were both out of town separately for about a week, and it was nice to reconnect. Again, I was in bed by like 10pm and up early the next day for a run with Sheri. We did a few easy miles and then I sat on the beach while Brittany finished her first ever open water swim with a group. We hit up Lofty Coffee, my absolute fave, for some coffees and poached eggs with avocado and arugula. To die for! We had some pool time at home and then a low key take-out sushi night.
The week was a super busy one and I am desperately craving some down time. I had one good night of sleep but I could really use a solid 8 hours and some time to just BE. I got a new FitBit Surge and now I am able to see how terribly (or how well) I’ve slept and this is super motivating to me. It also helps me to see how little I move throughout the day with the exception of running. I am starting to do more random mid-workday walks around the block or the building. It’s necessary.
Despite being busy and tired, I was extra happy this week and I think it was in large part due to the fact that I’m training for something again. It’s kind of weird because I could’ve sworn I was loving NOT training for anything. But here I am with a training plan before me and around 40 miles of running this week and I’m happier than ever. I love having those long runs to look forward to on the weekend and a reason to get my butt to bed early on Friday nights. Seriously, how lame do I sound right now? It just feels good to have a purpose again. I know, I know – I have a purpose much bigger than running races and I get that. There’s just something about chasing a new goal. It’s exhilarating.
I don’t like to think running defines me, but maybe sometimes it does. And maybe that isn’t such a terrible thing. I’ve certainly been defined by much worse things in other chapters of my life. I am driven by the desire to do new things, experience new highs and lows, be better, faster and stronger, to see just how far I can push myself, and to connect with people and nature along the way. That’s me – the runner and the person.
Here’s what LAST week in training looked like – Week 1 of Marathon + 50k Training
Basically this is a week late. I’ll start doing training updates on Mondays again.
Monday: OrangeTheory (included 2.6 miles w/ speed intervals + strength + rowing) & Yoga
Tuesday: 5 easy trail miles
Wednesday: 6.5 miles (2×2 @ tempo pace)
Friday: OrangeTheory + Run (5.2 miles w/ speed intervals)
Saturday: 12 miles (trails + road)
Sunday: 4.2 miles easy
Total (Miles): 35.5
This week will be closer to 40 miles and I’m feeling the slightest bit stronger. Progress is slow but it’s happening.
I am headed out super early tomorrow to run 12 miles with Sheri and then off to Temecula to celebrate Teresa’s birthday in wine country. Sunday I’ll be spectating the Solana Beach tri with Nicole. Brittany, Nicole’s husband and tons of friends are doing it so it will be fun to watch – while I drink my coffee and chill.
What are you training for?
Or are you just enjoying the summer and taking it easy?
