In honor of National Puppy Day, I thought I’d write about my pup who happens to love running as much (if not more) than I do.
Gunner is our adopted lab mix and half marathoner. He was supposed to be a foster but you know how that goes. I just knew he was my dog the minute he hopped out of Brittany’s car.
His personal distance record is 14 miles and if we let him, he’d probably run a marathon and qualify for Boston.
It’s not always smooth sailing when we run and we’ve had more mishaps than I can count. There was the time he somehow wrapped me around a light post and I fell on my ass while people watched. There was also the time he slipped out of his leash and went after another dog who just so happened to be recovering from back surgery. What are the odds? Another time he chased a bird all the way into a lagoon and Brittany had to drag him out, soaking wet.
So yeah – it’s not always easy running with Gunner, but it’s worth it for the amount of joy it brings him.
His happy place is on the trails down the street from our house. I usually run him down there and then let him off his leash once we’re on the trails. He gets so excited once he’s free and it instantly makes me grin ear to ear. Why aren’t we all that happy when we get to run? We really should be. It’s a gift, not an obligation.
I love running with people for the conversation, and I love running with my dog because he reminds me how fun running can be. There’s no talking or music, just our feet hitting the dirt, and let me tell you – it’s perfect. Gunner serves as my little reminder to always run like someone just let you off a leash.
