Hi guys! I’m still nursing my trail running wounds and will hopefully be back in the running game soon because September is already upon us. That means summer will end soon, San Diego will likely get hotter, and I will soon have only 12 weeks to train for the 50k in San Francisco. Yikes! More heat plus an increase in training is kind of tough but hey, it builds character. My PR marathon came after a HOT summer of training and I think it definitely helped to toughen me up.
In my opinion, race success comes from major dedication, lots of hard work, plenty of rest, proper nutrition and some sacrifices (depending on how you look at it). For instance, going to bed at 9:30pm on a Friday night when most people are out having cocktails. To some, that’s a major sacrifice. To me, it’s actually more like a blessing because I LOVE my sleep and productive Saturday mornings and I do not love hangovers.
When I’m in training mode, I don’t drink much alcohol at all. Actually, I haven’t really had any desire to drink much this past six months. Maybe it’s my age? Maybe I drank enough in the past to last me a lifetime? Or maybe it’s just the season of life I’m in? Who knows – but I’m just not into it and 1 glass of wine is plenty these days.
But there is something seriously delightful about a refreshing cocktail in the summer and I definitely crave something fruity on the rocks most days, especially on Fridays and on the weekends after my long runs. You really don’t need alcohol to satisfy that kind of craving though. Drinking bubbly kombucha in a wine glass totally does the trick and so do other bubbly beverages.
I was excited to discover the new Starbucks Refreshers® beverages which are basically refreshing, healthy, booze free bubbly. I love it! It’s perfect for summer training season.
What’s in Starbucks Refreshers® drinks? A blend of coconut water, fruit juice and green coffee extract. Green coffee extract is a great natural energy source and coconut water is chock full of electrolytes so basically it’s everything I could ever want and need in a “mocktail.” I’m sure they would also be insanely delicious mixed with gin or vodka but I’ll let you know after 50k training. 😉
My two favorite flavors are Black Cherry Limeade and Peach Passion Fruit. I was obsessed with black cherry soda as a kid so this one is everything to me. I don’t drink soda anymore so it’s such a treat to have something so delicious.
I wake up before the crack of dawn on weekends to run so by noon, I am usually ready for a nap. With these Starbucks Refreshers® drinks, I can skip the nap, drink a can, feel refreshed and get a natural boost of energy to go on with my day. This means I have more time for the beach and other things. Summer is flying by so I don’t want to waste it sleeping, you feel me?
I found Starbucks Refreshers® revitalizing energy at the Walgreens down the street from my house. You can find them at your local Walgreens, too. ** They’re also offering a promo: Buy 2 Starbucks Refreshers® beverages at Walgreens, get a FREE Quaker® Big Chewy Granola Bar, offer available August and September.
What do you drink during training?
Coconut water? Margaritas? Good ol’ fashioned H20?
